Haiku Crazy Quilt Block
March 24, 2008 by Melinda
I need to recharge my batteries with some freeform, unstructured needlework playtime. No chart, no plan, no design, no bright idea. I realized last week, as I struggled through finishing the fourth Welcome Home Sampler, that the time has come. I was stitching most of the design without refering to the chart and I have it memorized after working it four times now. It was also becoming just plain work and not fun. That’s when it becomes important for me to move onto something else.
I have been meaning to start a crazy quilt for some time now (last Fall?!) I am inspired by the work of other needleartists on blogs that I read and learn from. So, a big “thank you” to all those ladies who have helped me (however indirectly) to get going.
This one I will name Haiku. It has cherry blossoms and dandelion puffs on Japanese inspired fabric. I found a cream colored fabric with a slight imprint of dandelion puffs to use, in addition to a pale lavender, sea green and pale pink. I love cherry blossoms. The dandelion puffs have a funny little story attached to them, which is one reason I chose this fabric. My husband works tirelessly to rid the lawn of dandelions. My kids, on the other hand, take great pleasure in blowing all the dandelion puffs everywhere to “plant” more flowers. I thought it would make a great start for a visual poem.
I won’t be giving up the stitching, by any means, this week. I have begun the second part of a needlebook project. Small breaks are good though and I can have fun choosing colors and working on the block in between for a “just for me” project.
