Holiday Baking

The Spritz Cookies were Santa’s favorite again this year. They are so buttery with a hint of cardamom, I can see why. There seemed to be a good amount of gingerbread cookies missing from the tray as well though! I posted the recipe for these on my Once Upon a Thread page of my website if you’d like to try baking them for New Years gatherings. They are quick to bake up and are simply delicious.
The kids and I made our annual Gingerbread Houses. I figured I’d better get a photo before these disappear. It’s a funny thing to walk by the table and see a chunk of wall missing! This year’s models featured Necco wafer roofs rather than the frosted mini shredded wheat squares. I whipped up two rather large batches of royal icing and it is amazing how much did NOT get onto the houses. I always use a powdered eggwhite substitute for the royal icing so that it is safe to eat. This is such a fun activity with kids, I look forward to it every year.
I did manage to start a fun winter project for myself this past month. I began a small wool braided rug and work at it a bit at a time in the evenings. It is definitely on the “long term” project list! It is a diversion from needlework that I allow myself in between designs. I am happy to announce that I have completed the new set of needlework accessories that I started this month. Look for “The Windowbox” to debut early in 2008.
