What’s In Your Ornament Box
December 16, 2007 by Melinda
Decorating the Christmas tree every year is taking a trip back through time. There are many simple treasures, handmade, irreplaceable, filled with memory in amongst the usual store bought glass bulbs. It was fun watching the kids place the christmas ornaments on the tree this year, looking for the best spot to showcase a much-loved item up front. Other ornaments are placed towards the back, still loved for some special characteristic, but not quite what it takes to be placed on the front boughs. Many ornaments never make it to the tree and remain in the box. The ones that make it to the top of the tree are those that hold special status. They are the ones that hold the most memories.
There are the little knit stripey bells in red and green yarn with a jingle bell inside. Frayed loops and swirls stick out here and there from a cat that liked to play with them with his paw. There is the carefully knit red bell and green bell with the faux holly leaf passed down from grandmother, to daughter, to granddaughter. No loopy, pulled yarn on this one. It has always gone to the top of the tree far out of reach. There are the small crocheted pillows with tiny flowers and cross stitched ornaments given as gifts in years past. Handmade with love in every stitch. There are the colorful beaded candy canes by the girls, cinnamon hearts with red ribbon, kindergarten handprints in paint and glitter.
Handmade with love.
