Good Company

Over the weekend, I went to a White Elephant sale at a community group. What fun poking around. In amongst everything, I found an old wire bird cage and had a crazy moment… and bought it. My daughters and I headed to the local pet shop and spent some time looking at birds. No parakeets, please, too noisy in the morning. They are escape artists anyways and I don’t feel like chasing them around the house if they did get out. When I was growing up, we had one bird in particular that was a master at removing the bamboo posts of its cage.
We settled on two Australian Zebra Finches after much observation and listening to their songs. Our family had travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina for the Needlework trade shows for three years. In the lounge area was a large, glassed-in case with four of the lovliest birds we had seen. We have come to learn that these were Gouldian Finches. They have distinctive purple, yellow, orange feathers and markings. The finches we bought have beautiful markings as well, though not as colorful as the Gouldian Finches. The songs they sing reminded us of the ones from Charlotte.
The finches are such a delight. I placed the cage up on a wide bookcase in my studio so that the birds could get acclimated in a quiet spot. Over the course of the weekend, they settled in nicely to their new home. They make all sorts of beep and meep sounds, but best of all are the trilling sounds and their songs. My girls found some cool sites on the internet like Wikipedia to read and learn about finches and the things they like. I am so glad I found that birdcage. My days spent stitching will be filled with sweet songs and good company.
