Marking Time
August 31, 2007 by Melinda
Yesterday seemed like a good day to do my seasonal swap of projects around the house. I like to rotate quilts on the wall rack in the living room. By taking the quilts down occasionally, they are not subjected to long periods of gravity stretching the fabric and threads. I like to rotate the display of my needlework as well. I feel it is important to limit their exposure to sunlight and dust. Plus, it is just a simple way of welcoming a new and changing season.
When I do this seasonal rotation, it always feels like visiting an old friend. You tend to remember some of the rough patches or sections that seemed like it took forever to finish. You recall what drew you to stitch this particular piece in the first place, the hours spent in each others company and you remember the sense of accomplishment upon its completion. Due to the length of time it takes to create our needlework, it is inevitable that you stitch bits of your own story along the way. I make an effort to put my initials and date on most of my pieces. It is a curious way of marking the passage of time, but I feel it is important to do so. Was it really that long ago that I worked on that sampler? Ten years flew by pretty fast! Welcome back old friend.
